Where we began

Dr. Melissa Shepard is an accomplished psychiatrist and psychotherapist who has dealt with her own share of mental health struggles. Now, with over 1.3 million followers across several social media channels, she is helping more people than ever reach their full potential and take control of their mental health. Boldly Human was born from the belief that everyone deserves to have access to the support, education, and tools they need to improve their lives and care for their mental health.

Anita joins Boldly Human with 8 years of experience in the social work field, working with a myriad of diverse populations. She graduated with a Master’s of Social Work from The Catholic University of America and loves to facilitate growth and help people recognize their strength and power. She believes that mental health is just as important as physical health and should be available to all. Anita has a strong desire to create a space where everyone feels safe to be authentic. When she’s not working, Anita loves to spend time with her husband and their 3 dogs, Laika, Cooper, and Moose.

Dr. Melissa Shepard is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist committed to crushing the stigma of mental health and helping people become the most fulfilled version of themselves. She completed medical school at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and psychiatry residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. In her private practice she specializes in treating people with mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, OCD, trauma-related disorders, addiction and schizophrenia. Her mission is to provide unfiltered and accessible mental health education to the masses via a thriving social media community.

After a career in education and nonprofit fundraising, Mattie joined Boldly Human in May 2021. She brings creative solutions to marketing, social media, allyship and the “layperson” perspective on mental health to the team. She loves bringing mental healthcare to the masses and believes that mental healthcare should be available in some form to everyone with a mental health disorder. She lives in her native Charlotte, NC with her dog Piper. Her favorite self-care activity is yoga followed by Love Island with her partner and a big bowl of Trader Joe’s stir fry.

Prior to becoming a part of Boldly Human in October 2021, Carlisle graduated with a Master’s of Social Work from Appalachian State University. She brings patience, effectiveness, and reliability obtained through her education and work experience to communicate with clients daily. She carries a passion for helping people learn more about themselves and their own emotions while breaking down the stigma that mental health holds. She currently lives in Charlotte, NC
with her best friend. One of the ways she practices self-care is by playing music or a podcast while eating her favorite snacks on her porch accompanied by her cat.
