My goal is to help you achieve whatever success looks like for you. Often, reaching our goals can seem daunting and even anxiety-provoking. Let’s tackle this together!

I have worked in community mental health, outpatient, inpatient, volunteer, and primary care settings. I have experience helping clients who have had various concerns including stress, anxiety, depression, grief/loss, relationship issues, trauma, life change adjustments, adoption, substance use, and aging family members.

I like to use strength-based approaches to help people realize their own strengths and power to affect change in their lives and lead with confidence.
Sometimes the hardest part is the beginning. I hope to provide that safe space for all my clients to be authentic, to be able to share, interact, and to heal. Schedule an appointment with me today.

Anita doesn’t currently accept any insurance plans, however your plan may have out-of-network benefits that would reimburse you for appointments with Anita. The best way to find this out is by calling the customer service line on the back of your insurance card and asking about you out-of-network mental health benefits.

Anita’s out-of-pocket fees are as follows:

Initial consultation: $160.00

Therapy session: $90.00

We partner with Open Path Collective to offer a sliding scale therapy to those at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level who are un- or under-insured. Click here to see if you are eligible for a sliding scale discount with Boldly Human.

Hi, I’m Melissa (aka Dr. Shepard)! Since deciding to pursue psychiatry, I’ve made it my mission to end mental health stigma, increase access to care and make mental health treatment less scary.

I offer telepsychiatry (medication management only at this time) to NC & MD residents ages 15 and up. I completed my MD at the University of Maryland and psychiatry residency at Johns Hopkins. I have expertise in anxiety, OCD, mood disorders (depression and bipolar disorder), psychotic disorders, women’s mental health (including pregnancy), and more.

I have dealt with anxiety and depression and know how hard it can be. But I know that we can work together to get you feeling better, whether that is through therapy, medications, or both. There is hope, and you are not alone!

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally, we tell people if you are having more “bad” than “good” days or more “negative” than “positive” thoughts you may benefit from professional help. Therapy is very effective at managing and improving a HUGE list of mental health issues: anxiety, depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, trauma, self esteem, stress, and Bipolar disorder, to name a few.

Therapy can also guide us through more isolated life events like grief or sexual trauma and help folks identifying as LGBTQIA, racial minorities, adopted and religious minorities process and discover their identities.

TL;DR, a professional can help you with any of the issues listed above, and if you don’t see your issue but still feel like you need help, trust your gut – therapy is for everyone.

Yes! We are accepting new clients for online medication management in Maryland and North Carolina, and talk therapy in North Carolina.

Currently we are accepting clients for online talk therapy and medication management in North Carolina, and Maryland. Even though the appointments are online, make sure you’ll be physically in your state of residence.

In an effort to keep our prices affordable we have a range of options for payment, including sliding scale therapy and insurance coverage. Please see our providers below for information on fees, insurance and billing. Even if we’re not in network with your insurance company, still check with your plan to see if you have out of network mental health benefits – you may be eligible for reimbursement from your insurance company for visits with our providers. You can typically do this by calling the phone number on the back of your insurance card, or logging into your insurance online portal.

In an effort to make therapy more accessible to anyone who needs it, we partner with Open Path Collective to offer a sliding scale therapy to those at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level who are un- or under-insured.
